Class Description

Aikido is Japan's youngest martial art. Ai means harmony. Ki means energy. Do is the way. Thus, ai-ki-do is the way we harmonize energy. In other words, it emphasizes self-defense with a do-no-harm approach. And at DSBK, we integrate self-discovery through the self-defense. Aikido is great for all humans. This beginner boot camp is comprehensive. Each class explores a combination of this martial art's many facets. Think of it like a buffet where you can nibble on the vast offerings. Strengthen your confidence through techniques (efficient responses to attacks embedded in muscle memory over much time and repetition). Develop more poise through weapons (swinging a wooden sword or staff). Harness your ability to focus through meditative breathing and flowing exercises (called futari taisos). Learn to relax under pressure through randori practice (multi-opponent challenges). Ukemi (the art of falling) is great for those who want to defy the laws of gravity or just learn to prevent injuries in ordinary clutsy stumbles. Boot Camp classes are Mondays, 6-8pm on 4/29, 5/6, 5/13, and 5/20. IMPORTANT: Your Boot Camp registration covers attendance at any and all other DSBK regular classes throughout the month of May! Want more weapons? Come to all the weapons classes. Need more breathing and mindfulness training? Simply show up for Ki Class. Curious about techniques and attacks? We have a variety of aikido classes and instructors to choose from throughout the week. You can expect warm-up stretches and kinesthetics in each class. You can also expect plenty of time to repeat essential movements and concepts. Laughter is essential in the SBK system. Traditionally, martial artists train in a gi, which is a two-piece training uniform (loose pants and top tied with a belt). The fabric is durable and takes a lickin’. However, beginners should really only invest in a gi once they’ve tried aikido and love it. So, come wearing workout clothes, activewear, or gym clothes of some kind. (Pants are better than shorts and longer sleeves are better than tank tops for this training.) Definitely bring a water bottle and a readiness to have a great time working with excellent people. (Must be 18+ to register.)
